Does the Bible Prophesy About Europe?
You will not find the term Europe anywhere in the Bible. It does speak of Rome, but even then, it is describing the Roman Empire at the time of Christ and His apostles; it is not prophesying future events. To recognize prophecies about Europe, we must decipher the meaning of biblical metaphors. As you read through the Scripture below, interpretive notes are given in brackets and following the passages to help you understand this symbolism.
Fulfilled Prophecy
Rise of Rome through Daniel's interpretation of Nebuchadnezzar's dream—Daniel 2:31–45 (brackets added)
You, O king [Nebuchadnezzar], were watching; and behold, a great image! This great image, whose splendor was excellent, stood before you; and its form was awesome. This image's head was of fine gold [Babylon], its chest and arms of silver [Persia], its belly and thighs of bronze [Greece], its legs of iron [Rome], its feet partly of iron and partly of clay [the revived Roman Empire]. You watched while a stone [Christ] was cut out without hands, which struck the image on its feet of iron and clay, and broke them in pieces. Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold were crushed together, and became like chaff from the summer threshing floors; the wind carried them away so that no trace of them was found. And the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.
This is the dream. Now we will tell the interpretation of it before the king. You, O king, are a king of kings. For the God of heaven has given you a kingdom, power, strength, and glory; and wherever the children of men dwell, or the beasts of the field and the birds of the heaven, He has given them into your hand, and has made you ruler over them all—you are this head of gold [Babylon]. But after you shall arise another kingdom inferior to yours; then another, a third kingdom of bronze [Greece], which shall rule over all the earth. And the fourth kingdom shall be as strong as iron [Rome], inasmuch as iron breaks in pieces and shatters everything; and like iron that crushes, that kingdom will break in pieces and crush all the others. Whereas you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter's clay and partly of iron [revived Rome], the kingdom shall be divided; yet the strength of the iron shall be in it, just as you saw the iron mixed with ceramic clay. And as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly fragile. As you saw iron mixed with ceramic clay, they will mingle with the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, just as iron does not mix with clay. And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed [Christ's kingdom]; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever. Inasmuch as you saw that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold—the great God has made known to the king what will come to pass after this. The dream is certain, and its interpretation is sure.
"This vision gives us the history of human civilization, written by God Himself." –The Book of Signs, p. 19
Interpretive notes from The Jeremiah Study Bible:
While Scripture does not specifically identify Rome as the fourth empire, history indicates that it must be so. The Romans conquered Alexander's empire through what became known as the "iron legions of Rome." The word iron is used 14 times here. This imperialistic Roman nation put Jesus on the cross and ruled ruthlessly in the NT era.
In Psalm 2:9, a "rod of iron" is the scepter that represents kingship, iron being symbolic of strength (Rev. 2:26, 27; 19:15).
"Historians tell us that Rome was not only the successor to the Greek Empire, but they often use iron to describe the strength of the Roman Empire: Rome's iron rule. Rome's iron fist. Rome's iron legions."—The Book of Signs, p. 21
Future Prophecy
Return of Rome through Daniel's own vision—Daniel 7:7–8 (emphasis added)
After this I saw in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, exceedingly strong. It had huge iron teeth; it was devouring, breaking in pieces, and trampling the residue with its feet. It was different from all the beasts that were before it, and it had ten horns. I was considering the horns, and there was another horn, a little one, coming up among them, before whom three of the first horns were plucked out by the roots. And there, in this horn, were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking pompous words.
"According to Daniel, there is to be yet another division in the Roman Empire, symbolized by its ten toes. Daniel foretells a time when the Roman Empire will consist of ten kingdoms or leaders. Since the downward movement from one section of the statue to the next represents the passage of time, the "feet and toes" stage must follow the "legs" stage. But we find nothing in history that corresponds to a tenfold Roman coalition. That shows us that this fifth and final feet–and–toes–stage kingdom is yet to perform its prescribed role in human history." –The Book of Signs, p. 22
Interpretive note from The Jeremiah Study Bible:
The horns are 10 kingdoms that will rule simultaneously. From them will arise one little horn who will conquer the others, dominate the entire empire, and eventually become world dictator—the Antichrist.
