The Study Tool of Kings and Scribes
An Ancient Command
For thousands of years, God’s people have been copying His Word one letter at a time. In Deuteronomy 17:18, Moses commanded Israel’s king to make his own personal copy of the law: “It shall be, when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write for himself a copy of this law in a book, from the one before the priests, the Levites.”
Even before Moses’s instruction to the king, scribes had been making written copies of God’s law and covenant with Israel. As they copied Scripture over and over again, they developed a deep knowledge and preserved the Word for future generations.
This ancient practice continues to be one of the most effective tools for studying the Bible today.

What’s your typing speed?
Many of us spend our days clattering away on a keyboard, but pulling out a pen and paper changes the way our mind processes information. While we may be able to type more, we end up remembering less. Researchers have discovered that handwriting boosts the process of encoding information in a location in our brain where it is easy to access and review.
Consider these benefits of writing:
It gives clarity and focus.
It helps us prevent procrastination.
It improves our ability to understand complex concepts.
It motivates thinking and sharpens our thoughts.
It improves our long-term focus.
And God’s the One who thought of it first! He knows how writing enhances our ability to concentrate, remember, and comprehend His Word.
That is why we have created Romans: The Written Word Journal. May it become a helpful and effective tool as you study the Scriptures.
