Pride

In nineteen eighty-five, Jose Cubero was one of Spain’s most brilliant matadors. But he died at age twenty-one as the result of a prideful mistake. When the bull was down, Cubero turned to the crowd to accept their wild applause. But the bull got up and gored the unsuspecting young matador, ending his life.

One of life’s most dangerous activities is accepting applause from the crowd. Pride can deceive us into thinking we can do no wrong; that we have finally arrived. The Bible puts it this way: “Let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.”
